What is ANSELOL used for?

ANSELOL tablets are an effective treatment for hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (heart pain) and cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heart beat).

How does ANSELOL work and whatdoes it do?

ANSELOL is a selective beta-blocker. It reduces raised blood pressure and protects against heart irregularities caused by exercise.

ANSELOL reduces the amount of work that the left chamber of the heart needs to do. This means that less oxygen is required by the heart muscle, reducing the frequency and severity of angina attacks.

When should ANSELOL tablets not be taken?

ANSELOL can reduce the effectiveness of asthma drugs. ANSELOL should therefore be used with great caution, only upon medical advice, by asthmatics, hayfever sufferers and people with lung diseases.

ANSELOL should not be taken by people suffering from uncontrolled heart failure, congestive heart failure, right ventricular failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension, significant right ventricular hypertrophy, sick sinus syndrome, sinus bradycardia, second and third degree AV block, cardiogenic and hypovolaemic shock, hypotension (low blood pressure), metabolic acidosis, severe peripheral circulatory disturbances and untreated pheochromocytoma (a rare tumour of the adrenal glands). Each of these conditions can be clearly diagnosed by a doctor. They are separate diseases from those ailments for which ANSELOL tablets are given even though some symptoms can appear to be the same. If at all concerned, see your doctor.

ANSELOL tablets should be used with caution when undergoing anaesthesia.

ANSELOL tablets should not be taken if you are having an anaesthetic that can suppress the heart.

During pregnancy and/or breast-feeding,

ANSELOL tablets should be taken only if the risk to the mother from heart disease is greater than the risk to the child. However, both mother and child should be closely monitored by the doctor.

Do not take ANSELOL tablets if you have had an allergic reaction to ANSELOL or other atenolol tablets in the past.

What precautions should be taken?

Do not stop taking ANSELOL tablets abruptly.

Advise your doctor or pharmacist that you are taking ANSELOL tablets prior to undergoing surgery or beginning further drug treatment.

Inform your doctor if you suffer from diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or kidney disease.

Also inform your doctor if you are taking medication that contains clonidine, verapamil or diltiazem (calcium antagonists) or medicines for treatment of arthritis or other inflammatory conditions eg ibuprofen.

How should I take ANSELOL tablets?

Take ANSELOL tablets by mouth with water.

Your doctor will advise you how many tablets you should take and how often these should be taken.

What if one or more doses have notbeen taken?

If there are more than 12 hours before your next dose is due, take one dose. If there are less than 12 hours before your next dose and you do not have any discomfort, wait until your next dose is due.

However, in the event that you havediscomfort or chest pains, take one dose immediately. Your next dose should be not less than 9 hours later.

What unwanted side effects might ANSELOL tablets cause?

The most common side effects are indigestion, constipation, fatigue, dizziness and wheezing.

ANSELOL tablets can rarely cause the following adverse events: rash, diarrhoea, impotence, imbalance particularly with heights, ringing of ears, malaise, headache, insomnia, dry eyes, hallucination, depression, breathing difficulties, numbness, tingling, hypotension, vivid dreams, nightmares, confusion, cold extremities and bradycardia (slow heartbeat).
