Guidelines for pregnant athletes

24 May 2002

The latest guidelines released by the Australian Sports Commission recommend that pregnant women make their decision to continue playing sports in consultation with their medical practitioner, according to Sports Medicine Australia President Dr Anita Green.

The guidelines suggest avoiding sports such as horse riding, scuba diving, parachuting, water-skiing, martial arts, gymnastics and trampolining. But advice about continuing to play sports such as football or netball depends on individual fitness and the level and intensity at which the participant is playing.
