Nasal drops may be best taken when lying down

5 April 2002

People with rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis should lie down and put back their head when using steroid nose drops, say UK researchers.

This position leads to coverage of more than half of the middle meatus (nasal passage), they wrote in Clinical Otolaryngology and Allied Sciences (2002; 27: 18-21).

The researchers asked 5 volunteers to apply fluorescein dyed steroid drops into each nostril in 3 positions — with the head back; the head forward and down; and lying down with the head back.

While about one-third of the middle meatus was covered in the head forward and down position, only 6 per cent was covered in the head back position.

The most uncomfortable position was the head forward and down position. The other 2 positions were described as only mildly uncomfortable.
